The Government of Kenya through Kenya Railways has increased the SGR charges starting January 2024. The new ticket prices will come into effect on January 1st, 2024, and will affect both the passengers using economy and first class.

For the economy class, the tickets will rise from 1,000 shillings to 1,500 shillings for travel between Nairobi and Mombasa. The first-class tickets will also rise from 3,000 shillings to 4,500 shillings. This represents a 50% increase across these 2 categories.

The SGR has become a top choice for Kenyans traveling between Nairobi and Mombasa and those visiting the satellite towns between. This is evident by the millions of passengers that use the service per year giving the service provider Billions from ticket sales.

Children below the age of 11 normally pay half the price across all the classes.

Why were the SGR ticket prices increased?

When announcing the increment, Kenya Railways cited the rise in the cost of operations as the reason for this rise. The major one of these was a rise in the price of fuel.

New SGR Ticket Price Schedule

The increase in ticket prices will affect all the stations. Below is the new schedule.

What is the difference between economy class and first class on SGR

Some of the differences between economy class and first class are privacy, space, and comfort. The economy seats are less comfortable with passengers facing each other. However, first-class seats are fewer and offer more comfort.

Passengers with first-class tickets also tend to enjoy better lounges at the train stations. Finally, first-class passengers have access to a restaurant while in transit while those on economy don’t.
